To the reader who wrote and told me she was leaving my page because as a Bernie supporter I was a traitor to my sex:
To call someone anti-woman because she is not a Hillary supporter boggles my mind. I would never vote for someone, or not vote for someone, because of his or her sex. I vote based on a candidate's voting record; I vote based on my experience with a particular candidate; and I vote based on my interpretation of what a candidate has done and will do. Again that's my interpretation, not some talking heads, based on my own research. I have several friends who are die-hard Hillary fans; we are all intelligent women, in our 60’s, feminists, marched through the 60’s and 70’s, and yes, we disagree. Grown up people disagree, but the sane among us don’t have to bomb each other or engage in bloviated Trump type responses because of a difference of opinion.
Like most of the women who support Bernie, I have every intention of voting for Hillary if he loses the primary. I am done with the vitriol coming from both sides—and that means the Clinton and Sanders camp. Done. When I post something positive about Hillary, and I have on numerous occasions, I am excoriated by Sanders’ supporters; when I post something positive about Sanders I am excoriated by Hillary supporters. And in the MAWT newsfeeds people are ripping each other new assholes for not supporting their candidate. That was never what this page was about; this page was supposed to be a place for nuanced conversation among progressives. I expected disagreements; I did not expect what I’ve been reading recently.
It’s so ugly out there right now. People are feeling so powerless and rather than admit it, they’re screaming at each other. There’s an ever growing polarization between progressives that scares the crap out of me because no matter who wins, Hillary or Bernie, we still have to come together and continue to work and push for structural and policy change. Structural and policy change that will be next to impossible if the states don’t vote democratic. Right wing Republicans have proven to be brilliant at taking over state legislatures and have quite successfully eroded a woman’s right to an abortion, replaced some public education with vouchers, and severely weakened unions with purposely-misnamed right-to-work-laws. The pitched battle between the Hillary and Sanders camps has quite literally erased any and all focus on state elections.
I can’t help thinking that it’s on purpose. I can’t help thinking that the-powers-that-be are busy throwing gasoline on the fires of divisiveness so they can continue to do exactly what they’ve been doing, exactly how they’ve been doing it.
